In spite of its size, importance, and critical transformations in the last 30 years, the Brazilian Cerrado lacks an adequated (scale wise) and updated land cover map. With this respect, in this paper we present the methodological approach of an on-going work regarding a semi-detailed (1:500.000 scale) land cover and vegetation map based on MODIS vegetation index and SRTM altimetric imagery, as well as on census data. Such map, expected to be concluded by November 2005, will certainly contribute to the efforts of monitoring the vegetative cover of this important and endangered biome.
